The club I am picking did not have a booth at Clubfest. It is Freshman Leaders in Engineering (FLiE). It is a club that I had to apply to become a member. I actually applied in August right before I came to Ames. It is a club that is for freshmen in engineering. Leadership experience and skills are a given. There are 30 members chosen in the second week of school, and I was one of them.
There are many opportunities in FLiE. We are the organization who has the privilage to build the engineering float for VEISHA. We also work hand in hand with Engineering Student Council (ESC) on many projects, and it is easy for members of FLiE to become members of ESC after their freshmen year. I am the treasurer for FLiE, so I am essentially a leader of leaders. It will open up many doors for me.
The club has a lot of fun activities. Next week, instead of a reguar meeting, we are going to play glow in the dark ultimate frisbee instead of having a regular meeting. Every week after a regular meeting, we also play fun games to get to know each other. We also volunteer our services at the Ames middle school as tutors and mentors for students. Plus, we have the honor of building the VEISHA float.
I joined this club in order to become a better leader and gain additional leadership experience. Since it is a club that has an application process, it is more prestigious than some of the other ones and a better use of my limited time. It is also helping me to get to know other engineers that are not in my major, who I may otherwise never meet. This club is a great way to open doors for me here at Iowa State both personal and academic.

ReplyDeleteThe club sounds like a lot of fun, plus it can help you build a lot of skills to be successful in engineering. You got me interested in possibly joining a similar club next year, maybe ESC.
